The legal troubles for Remy Ma just keep piling up.
She's already gotten hit with an attempted murder rap. Now, the rapper has been ordered to stand trial on witness-tampering and gang-assault charges stemming from a nightclub altercation in August.
According to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, New York Supreme Court Judge Rena Uviller denied a petition by Ma's attorney to have the additional charges thrown out on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
The 26-year-old hip-hopster, born Remy Smith, is accused of instigating a late night melee in which several male associates in her entourage beat up the boyfriend of Makeda Barnes-Joseph, an acquaintance she's accused of shooting last summer after a dispute over missing money.
The smackdown occurred on Aug 19 at a nightclub in the Bronx and the victim, who was not identified, reportedly suffered a black eye, shattered jaw and broken cheekbone in the attack.
After further investigation of the incident by police, prosecutors decided to update the original indictment against the onetime Grammy nominee.
"She saw the boyfriend of a potential witness, then minutes later a group of men beat up the potential witness and that's why the indictment contains more charges," said D.A. spokeswoman Jennifer Kushner.
Ma's legal mess dates back to July 14, when she and Barnes-Joseph, a friend for over a decade, got into an argument as they left a birthday party in Manhattan's trendy Meatpacking District. As the emcee climbed into her car, she accused Barnes-Joseph of stealing about $3,000, ordered her to dump out the contents of her purse. The two women then struggled, at which point, Ma allegedly shot her twice with a .45-caliber gun in the torso.
Barnes-Joseph survived after being treated for 16 days at an area hospital. Police discovered Ma's Cadillac Escalade abandoned after crashing into a parked car, and the performer turned herself in later that night.
At her arraignment, Ma was booked on assault in the first degree (the felony equivalent of an attempted murder charge), criminal possession of a weapon and assault and coercion and was released on $250,000 bail.
Upon learning of the August fight, prosecutors tacked on gang assault and tampering with a witness to the original indictment.
Ma has pleaded not guilty to all charges. If convicted of the more top-level count of assault in the first degree, she could get up to 25 years in prison while she faces another seven years for the gang assault and witness-intimidation charges.
Ma's lawyer, Ivan Fisher, said that despite losing his bid to have the gang-assault charges tossed, he predicts his client will be vindicated in the end.
"Asking a judge to throw out the case before trial is asking for an extraordinary thing. It happens but it's very, very rare," the attorney told E! Online. "Prosecutors think somehow she had something to do with [the fight] but she assures me that she did not."
Fisher added the entertainer also passed a polygraph test about the shooting and he expects the truth of that evening will come out when they go to trial, which he expects will likely be the end of January.
"She's an extremely strong woman and is holding up very, very well at least on the surface," he said.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Jan. 3, which is when the D.A. may or may not introduce DNA evidence—reportedly the results of blood found on Ma's clothes.
At that point, the judge might also set a trial date.
